TROUT FISHERS’ FEDERATION WELCOMES GOVERNMENT CHANGE
A national trout fishing organisation has welcomed the formation of the NZ First, Labour and Green Parties government and the relegation of the National-led government to opposition.
The defeated government’s policies were disrespectful of the public’s environment, particularly as regards the crucial state of the countries rivers, streams and lakes said the federation’s president Graham Carter.
The coalition stopped the National Party from forming another government and continuing its damaging agenda that saw rivers drying up and getting dirtier. Environmentally it is hoped the political landscape has changed.
Graham Carter said other issues such as climate change and ridiculous free market approaches to it, foreign farm and high country sales had also created concerns amongst the trout fishing public.
“We hope for a restoration of the integrity of the RMA with rivers given a goal of maximum health,” he said. Other issues he identified were the National-led government’s state control grab of ECan in Canterbury and widespread use of aerial 1080 poison.
“We look to take up dialogue with the new Ministers of Conservation and the Environment spell out some issues that need immediate remedial action,” said Graham Carter.
